Dos and Don'ts for Decorating Your Interior

When it comes to decorating your home, there are certain principles of design that should be adhered to in order to create a unique look that works. You could be looking to renovate a new space or just to freshen up the look of a room, but whichever it is, there are some dos and don’ts to keep you on the straight and narrow.

Do Take The Architecture Of The Room Into Account

Whether you’d adding a landscape painting or a new piece of modern art, you should take the structure of your home into account. For example, you might be in love with the look of a costal home, but the aesthetics aren’t going to work if your home is located near the desert. use the environment around you to influence your decorating scheme.

Don’t Dedicate Rooms To Specific Themes

Everyone has their one design that they are absolutely in love with and what to turn to it all the time for inspiration in decorating their home. But taking that inspiration too far can create an overly-themed area that can come across as trying too hard. It’s better to incorporate just a few elements of that theme so that it goes well with the rest of the decor in your home.

Do Mix Old And New Together

There’s something about old elements being combined with new ones that just works out so well together. Something as simple as a vintage clock or antique shelf can add a lot of character to an otherwise modern room. It prevents a room from feeling too uniform and “bland.”

Don’t Place All Furniture Against The Walls

You might want to create as much space as necessary, but putting all of your furniture against the walls can stunt the flow of a room and make it look too boxy. Use the entire room and move things around to create a more flowing aesthetic.

Do Make Moodboards

Create moodboards and flor plans for each rom of the home so that they flow naturally into each other. Save images that give you inspiration for these spaces so that you know how to make them work together.

Don’t Buy Matching Sets Of Furniture

You’re creating a home, not an office environment. Having everything match takes the character out of a room and creates an overall boring look that isn’t going to spark any imagination. Buy a set of furniture you love, and then decorate around it with other pieces.

Do Take Your Time

Finding the inspiration you’re looking for isn’t going to happen overnight. You can’t get all of your decorating done in one day, and it takes time to put together the pieces that work together.

Don’t Decorate Around Only One Colour

Finding a colour palette can be difficult, but choosing only one colour for your home will make it look bland. It’s best to find a colour that appeals to your eye and work from there. It helps to mix things up too and consider complimentary colours to work in the adjacent rooms.

Decorating your interior isn’t an easy job, and since you’re going to be living with it for a long time, you should spend a lot of time thinking about it to make it work. If you are need of some ideas or inspiration, don’t hesitate to consider contacting your local interior design to help you out.
