The counter space point is a good one because my kitchen is already full. I was thinking it would replace the hassle of trays but if it needs draining and cleaning after every use maybe a bag of ice really is easier when guests come.
Are those countertop ice makers on Amazon actually worth buying?
I keep getting ads for small countertop ice makers and they look useful, especially in summer, but reviews are all over the place. Some people say they love them and other people say they are loud, need constant cleaning, or stop working after a few months. I dont need fancy ice, I just want something that works for drinks when people are over. Would you buy one or just keep using freezer trays?
Replies point out that countertop ice makers can be convenient for gatherings and hot weather, but cleaning, noise, storage, and reliability matter more than the attractive product photos.

For a summer party I understand wanting one, but I would honestly borrow one first if you know someone who has it. Small appliances always look life-changing online then sometimes you realize the setup and cleaning is more annoying than just buying a bag of ice when people come over.
What makes me suspicious is how many brands look like the exact same machine with a different logo. I would not choose only from star ratings. I would read the recent low reviews and look for the same problem repeating, especially leaks, noise or it dying after the return window closes. If the same complaint keeps showing up, thats probably the real review.
I can see it being worth it if you entertain a lot or your fridge ice maker is terrible. But for one person making iced coffee, I feel like it could be another thing taking up counter space. The machines also dont freeze ice for long from what I understand, they just keep producing it, so you still need to move extra ice into the freezer.
The part that would stop me is the cleaning. A small appliance that holds water and sits on the counter can get gross fast if it is annoying to empty or wipe out. Before buying, I would check whether the basket comes out, whether it drains easily, and whether owners mention a weird smell after a few weeks. A cheap machine that you hate cleaning is probably going to become cabinet clutter.
