Road trips shine when the journey is part of the vacation. National parks, small towns and scenic routes make the drive feel worth it. If you are only driving to sit in one city hotel, flying may still make more sense.
Are U.S. road trips becoming better than flying for family vacations?
Flights for our family are expensive, and bags and seat fees make it worse. I’m wondering if a road trip is actually more relaxing or just a different kind of stress.
Families compare U.S. road trips with flying, including cost, flexibility, stress, kids and hidden travel fees.
Answers & Discussion
For short and medium distances, driving wins. For anything over two very long days, I would rather fly if the budget allows. The trick is being honest about your family’s limits. A 12-hour drive sounds cheaper until everyone is miserable.
Road trips are better for us because we can bring snacks, stop when the kids need a break and avoid airport stress. It is not always cheaper once hotels and gas add up, but it feels more flexible. Flying with kids can be exhausting before the trip even starts.
