As a partner, I learned not to pressure my girlfriend to stay on something because it was convenient for me. If a method affects her mood, libido or body badly, that matters. Contraception should be a shared responsibility, not something she suffers through alone.
Can birth control make mood symptoms better or worse?
I’ve heard women say birth control helped their periods and mood, while others say it made anxiety or depression worse. How do people figure out what works?
People discuss different experiences with hormonal birth control, mood changes, period control and working with clinicians to adjust options.
Answers & Discussion
People talk about birth control like it is one thing, but there are different hormones, doses and delivery methods. Someone’s terrible experience does not mean yours will be the same. But if your mood changes after starting, that is worth taking seriously and reporting.
It can go either way. One pill made me feel flat and anxious, another helped cramps and mood swings. I kept notes for three months on each option and brought them to my doctor. It is frustrating, but the first method is not always the right method.
