A budget should not be a punishment. It should tell you what is safe to spend. The app that helped me most was the one that gave me guilt-free spending money after bills and savings. If the app only makes you feel bad, you will avoid it.
Do budgeting apps actually help, or do they just make you feel guilty?
I’ve tried a few budgeting apps and always stop after a month. They show me where the money went, but I’m not sure they change my habits.
People compare budgeting apps, spreadsheets and simpler systems for changing spending habits without guilt.
Answers & Discussion
I prefer a spreadsheet because entering spending manually makes me feel the purchase. Apps were too passive for me. They categorized everything after the damage was done. Manual tracking is annoying, but that is partly why it works.
Apps helped me only after I simplified the categories. When I had 30 categories, I felt like I was failing every day. Now I track fixed bills, groceries, fun money and savings. Less detail made the budget easier to keep.
