Use lip liner all over the lips before matte lipstick. It gives the lipstick something to grip and helps it fade evenly. I also avoid the driest liquid mattes for daily wear because some formulas are just too harsh.

Gentle exfoliation once or twice a week made the biggest difference. Matte lipstick grabs flakes, so you need a smooth base. I use a damp washcloth lightly, then balm overnight. I do not scrub hard because that makes my lips worse.

Apply balm at the start of your makeup, not right before lipstick. Let it sit while you do your face, then blot off the excess before lip liner. That way your lips are softened but not slippery.
