How hard is it to get a first apprenticeship with no family connections?

I do not know anyone in construction or the trades. I can work hard, but I am worried companies only hire people they already know. What helped you get your first break?

AI Summary

The answers say connections help, but are not everything. Showing up prepared, applying widely, visiting shops, and taking safety certificates can help someone get noticed.

I had zero family in trades. I printed a simple resume, got my fall protection and WHMIS, then walked into small shops. One owner called me two weeks later because I seemed serious.

Connections help, but attitude matters. Be the person who answers the phone, has boots, has transportation, and does not complain about sweeping. That is how many people start.

Apply to boring companies too. Everyone wants the big-name contractor, but a small local shop may give you more hands-on work faster.
