A lot of people around Newtown also mention MBL Service Station. I used them for a smaller issue and they were very no-nonsense. For an older car, I care less about fancy waiting rooms and more about someone who will say, 'You can leave that for six months.' That is the kind of mechanic I try to keep.
I’m in Sydney’s Inner West. Has anyone used Frank’s Automotive in Marrickville or Balmain Mechanical?
My car needs a service and maybe brakes. I’m trying to avoid a mechanic who adds extras I don’t need. Any real experiences around Marrickville, Balmain, Newtown or nearby?

Balmain Mechanical has been good to us for regular servicing. They are not the cheapest place I have ever used, but they have been straight with us, and the car comes back without drama. For brakes, I would ask for a written quote first anywhere you go. That way you can compare properly instead of guessing.
I used Frank’s Automotive once for a service and a noise from the front end. What I liked was that they explained what was urgent and what could wait. I did not feel pushed into doing everything at once. That matters to me because I have had other places turn a basic service into a huge list of scary recommendations.
