The first meal alone is the hardest. After that, it becomes normal. Bring a book, sit at counters and start with casual places. Japan made me much more comfortable as a solo traveler.

You also have convenience stores and department-store food halls when you need a low-pressure meal. I had some of my favorite solo dinners from depachika food floors and ate them back at the hotel after a long day.
Japan is one of the easiest places to eat alone. Ramen shops, conveyor sushi, cafés and casual counters are very solo-friendly. In Tokyo especially, nobody cares that you are by yourself.
