Some tenderness and swelling can change with your cycle, but a new one-sided change or something that persists deserves a call. Knowing your usual pattern helps. It is not about obsessively checking every day; it is about noticing changes that are different for you.
What breast changes should never be ignored?
I know not every lump is cancer, but I’m confused about what changes should be checked quickly versus watched for a cycle.
People discuss breast changes that should be checked, including new lumps, skin changes, nipple changes and unusual discharge.

Nipple changes matter too. Pulling inward, bloody discharge, skin flaking, dimpling or a new rash that does not go away should not be ignored. A lot of people only think of a lump, but breast cancer symptoms can be more than that.
A new lump that does not feel normal for you should be checked. Mine was benign, but getting imaging gave me peace of mind. Doctors would rather evaluate a harmless change than have someone wait too long because they were embarrassed or scared.
