In the U.S., I underestimated distance. A map can make two cities look close, but the drive may be six hours plus stops. Build realistic driving days. America is huge, and road trips need breathing room.
What is one travel mistake you made in the U.S., Europe or Japan that you would warn others about?
I’m planning future trips and want to learn from real people, not perfect travel guides. What mistake cost you money, time or stress?
Travelers share real mistakes from U.S., Europe and Japan trips, including overpacking, overplanning, transit errors and bad lodging choices.
Answers & Discussion
In Japan, I underestimated big train stations. Some stations feel like underground cities. Give yourself extra time, especially when catching long-distance trains. Being early is much less stressful than sprinting through Shinjuku with luggage.
I overpacked for Europe and regretted it every time I carried luggage through stairs, trains and cobblestone streets. Pack lighter than you think. Laundry is easier than dragging a giant suitcase across three countries.
