If you want a darker, slower obsession movie, Zodiac is incredible. It is not a typical crime thriller with big action scenes. It is about uncertainty and how a case can eat people’s lives. I think about it more than almost any crime film.

Goodfellas is the best crime movie for me because it moves like a memory. The narration, music, editing and performances make you feel the seduction of that world before it collapses. It is entertaining but never lets you forget how ugly the life is.

Heat is my pick because it has everything: cops, criminals, obsession, loneliness and one of the best shootouts ever filmed. The diner scene between Pacino and De Niro is enough reason to watch it. It feels like a crime movie and a character study at the same time.
