I was always told cramps are normal, but mine sometimes make me miss work or feel nauseous. I don’t know what counts as normal pain versus something that should be checked.

Doctors hear 'bad cramps' all the time, so be specific. Say how many days, pain level, whether you miss work, how heavy bleeding is, and what medicines do or do not help. That makes it easier to decide whether you need testing, hormonal treatment, imaging or a specialist referral.

Normal for me is discomfort that improves with heat and over-the-counter medication. Concerning is pain that keeps getting worse, pain outside the period, heavy bleeding, vomiting or pain that does not respond to anything. I wish I had written down symptoms earlier because appointments go better when you have details.

If cramps make you miss work, school or normal activities, I would not treat that as normal just because periods are common. I spent years being told to take painkillers, and later found out I had endometriosis. Not everyone with bad cramps has a condition, but severe pain deserves evaluation.
