Porto surprised me the most. It had great food, river views, character, and did not feel as overwhelming as bigger cities.
Which famous European city felt overrated to you, and which one surprised you?
Every Europe travel list recommends the same cities. I'm curious which popular city disappointed you and which underrated place ended up being better than expected.
Users had mixed opinions because expectations matter. Some famous cities felt crowded or expensive, while smaller places such as Porto, Bologna, Ljubljana, and Ghent surprised people with food, charm, and easier pacing.
Answers & Discussion
Bologna was better than I expected. It felt like a real food city and was less touristy than Rome or Venice.
I would not say Venice is overrated, but visiting during peak crowds made it hard to enjoy. Staying overnight helped a lot.
Ghent surprised me. It had the beauty people look for in Bruges but felt more relaxed when I visited.
