As the Capitol of the United States, Washington DC overflows with history, grand monuments, and tourist from around the world. There is no such thing as off-season when it comes to DC tourism, although the crowds are not as dense if there is no major event happening. It’s best to schedule your time well to see the items highest on your personal list because there’s so much to see you can easily get side tracked.
4Go Museum Hopping
Both sides of the Mall between the Capitol building and the Washington Monument are lined with free Smithsonian museums. The most popular among these is the Air and Space Museum on the Independence Avenue side, visited by millions of people from all over the world every year. Across the Mall on the Constitution Avenue side are the Museums of Art and Modern Art, which are connected by an underground café and book store.
Farther down the street are the Museum of Natural History, where you can see the Hope Diamond, and the Museum of American History, which displays such national treasures as Fonzie’s leather jacket and the kitchens of some people’s childhood! All museums are free of charge, and if you want to hop the metro up to the National Zoo (on the Red Line), you can go there for free as well and see the baby pandas.
