Musk’s flight records in his $70 million Gulfstream jet show he landed in Cabo on Saturday, before departing the next morning for Paris, arriving there on Monday morning.

Despite Musk’s untidy appearance, his meeting with Macron will be seen as an achievement for the French president, as the French leader has faced a decline in his popularity since raising the retirement age in France, and this decision caused months of protests and strikes.

Macron hopes that Musk’s visit will divert attention from this controversy and direct it towards his reform path in support of investments, which includes promoting environmentally friendly initiatives such as electric cars.

In a tweet after the meeting, the French president said the two men discussed France’s attractiveness, progress in the energy and electric vehicle sectors, and digital regulation. “We have a lot to do together,” he added.

Musk was also scheduled to attend a round table discussion on green manufacturing, in addition to a dinner with other businessmen, and in response to a question from BFM TV about Musk’s potential investments, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said, “All the investments we see today are the result of months.” Or even years of negotiations.

Tesla has not made any major investments in France yet, and the only huge Tesla factory in Europe is located in Berlin, which Musk chose despite Paris initiatives.
