Moving or relocating will always require some outlay of money, and you must be well aware of this before you set forward the process of moving. A moving budget allows you to know what finances you require for each stage of the relocation manoeuver. A budget will let you know how much you need to complete the shifting and probably negotiate with your new employers if they agree to fund this. If you have a budget, you can monitor it at each stage and act quickly if it is exceeded at any stage. Once you have moved and have all the figures adequately analyzed, it can help you plan any moves in the future and even become a handy reference for friends and other people who may need to move.

Start with getting an estimate from reliable movers who are well represented in your city as well as the place you want to move to. Let them give the estimate after they inspect your home, see what is to be moved, and get details of where it is to be moved to. The cost of moving services is mostly decided on the weight to be moved, and the distance has to be shifted. Some companies may quote more for weight and less for distance, or vice versa. This becomes more important if you have to move a long distance and less so if you are moving within the city, where the charges may remain fixed.

Insurance is another cost you need to budget for, and most moving companies will insist on it. Full value protection may be the best alternative; though it may increase your costs, it will bring you peace of mind. Some companies may even ask for deposits that you may have to be prepared for, although these will always be reimbursed to you finally.

Most moving companies will quote for services like packing and unpacking, and it is up to you to decide the alternative you are comfortable with. If you are doing the packing and unpacking yourself, you will have to factor in these costs, as it can require quite a bit of finance for boxes and crates, packing supplies, and disposal of the same after you have unpacked. In case you do not have a place where the goods are to be delivered, you can ask the moving companies to quote additionally for storage till the time you have finalized your new home. This can mean a substantial increase in cost that you need to budget for.

Some companies may charge extra if the packed goods have to be carried manually up or down long flights of stairs or if either of your homes is far from the road where the trucks will be parked. Bulky items can cost extra and must be factored into your budget. Long-distance moving may require additional charges to be paid for extra stops along the way and need you to pay for the moving crew’s travel, especially if they have no representation at the other end.

Moving to a different city that is far away can also require you to arrange for the shipping of your car or cars while you trip yourself by plane or train. Even if you are driving down yourself to the new city, there will be costs here, for fuel, stops, or even hotel stays, that you need to budget for so that these expenses do not catch you unawares. Auto transportation companies are specialized in moving companies, and you may need to contact them separately from those who move your goods. You will also need to budget for your tickets’ cost for your alternate mode of travel with the family to the new city.

Besides all this cost of the actual moving, there can be costs for closing your present establishment, which may involve clearing the home to the satisfaction of its new owner or landlord if you have leased it. Similarly, there will be costs at the new house, like deposits for lease or to get the utilities installed and started. You will also be required to make arrangements for running your home till your new job starts paying you, and this may well be a part of your moving budget.
