Whenever I get frustrated and start looking for a new machine, I look at Consumer Reports and read the reviews on Amazon and elsewhere. I’ve been disappointed at times, but more on my rare frolics with other brands. In the last two years, for example, two Epsons have disappointed: an NX-620 and an XP-410. Both had flaky wireless connections, at least before routine firmware updates, and ink in the second dried up from nonuse so hard and so repeatedly that I'm giving the machine to Goodwill.
What makes Canon’s products attractive? In general, Japanese printers have marvelous hardware and terrible software. Canon’s hardware is just a bit better, beginning with the little LEDs on the ink cartridges that tell you each one’s status (by blinking or not). With them, you don’t have to re-learn how to use software that you resort to only once every several months, and you don’t have to get a flashlight to see which cartridge is the one the software says is low.
Some say the MG5720 is flimsy. But it’s home printer, not a lathe. For someone over 70, like me, light weight is a plus. The MG5720 weighs less than half the MP610 that it replaced, with about the same profile and space requirements. So it’s much easier to handle and to carry around. You just have to treat it like the delicate machine it is.
But the best thing about the MG5720 is the software, or rather, the lack of it. Apparently Canon has wisely capitulated and begun sticking to its knitting—hardware—leaving software to others, at least for Mac users. Using Apple’s “Bonjour” and “AirPrint” features, I took less than an hour to get the printer operating wirelessly with my Mac Mini, my older Mac Book Air, and a friend’s iPad and iPhone 6. And that was out of the box.
For Mac users, the trick is not even to *look* at the disks that come with the printer. Just get it up on your wireless local-area network (LAN) and let Apple do the rest.
For computers, open up “System Preferences” and go to “Printers and Scanners.” Make sure your wireless connection is on and the MG5720 is connected to your home LAN. Then go to the “Printers” list box at the left, open the lock with an administrator password if necessary, and click on the plus sign. After a short time, the MG5720 will appear, in my case in two options. I clicked on the “Bonjour” option, and the Mac OS did the rest. In a few seconds the printer was ready for wireless printing and scanning.
Apple’s AirPrint feature worked as easily on the iPad and iPhone 6. I had never used that feature, but a little Web search for “how to use Air Print” produced clear and simple instructions.
The basic rule is to look for the “Share” icon, which is supposed to be a rectangular box with a curved arrow coming out to the upper right. Unfortunately, all the various App vendors, including Apple itself, observe that custom in the breach. So you will find all sorts of icons and entry points into the “Air Print” or simply “Print” features in various apps.
But there’s not much desktop real estate on a iPad or and iPhone, and therefore not many icons. Just root around on the icons for your app and scan through all their features. Eventually you will find the print feature, if the app has one. Some apps don’t, but we got Air Print working on Safari, easily, on both devices.
One hardware feature takes some getting used to. The directional navigation buttons around the central “OK” button don’t do much. Most of the “navigation” through features on the (non-touch) screen relies on the three long, horizontal buttons below it. Their labels appear on the screen just above and are software controlled. Canon’s screen helpfully reminds you to use those three buttons instead of the four directional buttons around “OK.”
With that point assimilated, it was easy to set up the wireless, even though I have a hidden network and a long password. I just went directly to “Other” and “Advanced,” and the printer asked my for the hidden network SSID and the password. I did everything from the screen and keypad. No software installation required.
One small thing confused me. My LAN has MAC-number access control, so I started looking for the printer’s MAC number and couldn’t find it. Yet the wireless worked without my putting the printer’s MAC number in the “permitted” list in my Airport Extreme’s configuration.
I don’t know why. Maybe the Mac software skirts the MAC-number requirement for printers; or maybe it automatically downloaded the printer’s MAC number. Whatever the reason, it made my setup more convenient but might be compromising security. I’m not worried, as I live way out in the country where most wireless LANs don’t reach to the next house.
As for ink, the cartridges prices produce a little sticker shock. A four-color package (excluding the fifth, big black cartridge) costs about $45 on Amazon.
But this is not a business printer. I’m trying to train myself to use the “Save as PDF” feature on Apple’s "Print" screen and so store most documents that I used to print electronically, so they are easier to find and harder to lose.
Paper files are becoming obsolete. And scanning documents to be sent as e-mail attachments has already replaced faxing in my home. (I have no land line, only a cell phone, which a V-Tech device converts into two cordless phones when I’m home.)
Recently Consumer Reports had a short blurb on a upcoming Epson printer with refillable cartridges and ink in big jars. The estimated price of the printer was $500. That gives us a good idea what it actually costs to produce these printers—not surprising, with all their reliable hardware and multifarious software features.
To reach that level of price from my $70 printer price, I would have to replace the various ink cartridges about ten times. With my newly reduced print usage, that should take me at least two or three years, by which time new printers will beckon with new and alluring features. Being able to buy into the stream of new developments for only $70 is not a bad deal at all. And if I can complete my self-training to use the scanner more than the printer and copier, I’ll keep ink costs down. In fact, my next purchase may be a standalone scanner, if I can find space in my office.
UPDATE AFTER FOUR DAYS OF USE: After four days, I like the MG5720 even more. Two useful features are worth some tips.
First, the printer goes to sleep after some time of nonuse, helping to preserve itself and our planet. To restart wireless printing, you just have to hit the "ON" button once. You can do this even after trying to print something. Then you can watch the printer awaken and start to print by clicking on the printer icon that appears in your Mac dock. The process takes less than 30 seconds.
The second useful feature is a reminder, on the non-touch screen, to select (or re-select) the paper type each time you reload the cassette. This feature helped me much in printing business cards. I never thought a wrap-around-platen printer like this once could handle such thick stock. But I gave it a try, using the "Matte" setting for (thick) matte photo paper. It worked like a charm. The only downside is that it takes three clicks to "register" the new paper size. But that beats ruining paper, jamming and having to clear the machine, and swearing a lot.
As a college student, I recently purchased this Canon printer (which includes a scanner and copier) to be able to print various study materials, without having to go to campus. It was on sale for only $40, which was perfect for my price range. I also looked for included ink, wireless connectivity, and a modern look. After around three months of use, I am very pleased with this purchase.
Positives:
o Came supplied with ink
o Wireless connectivity
o Sleek and modern look
Supplied with ink- This printer came supplied with a single cartridge of each color of ink needed. I thought the printer was only going to include black ink, so this was a pleasant surprise. This way, any consumer who purchases this printer can save a little bit of money on ink, especially if you want color.
Wireless connectivity- To add to the perks of this printer, I was able to connect this printer to my computer very easily. Anyone with a Windows or Mac computer is able to print wirelessly or by using a USB cord. The wireless set-up is directly accessible from Microsoft Word or Systems Settings, and then you are able to navigate around the menu from there. Wireless printing from photos is also an option, which is always a nice option to have.
Sleek and modern look- This sleek and modern look is a very positive aspect of purchasing this printer, if you would like for it to look “in style”. I definitely did not want a bulky looking printer, so this choice was perfect. The all black look is very professional, and the menu screen looks very updated. Disregarding looks, you can also Air Print from an iPhone or iPod which is a modern feature.
Negatives:
o Slightly difficult overall set-up
Set-up- Overall I have really enjoyed the printer and gave it 5 stars; nevertheless, I would recommend to be very patient with the set-up. It took just a little longer than expected. The alignment for the paper was also off at first, but it was an easy fix.
Overall, this has been a very reliable printer for all of my schoolwork. I would definitely purchase a Canon printer if needed later on. I recommend this printer/copier/scanner to any individual who is searching for school, work, or personal needs.
