The US Geological Survey announced that an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale occurred off the coast of Northern California on Tuesday.
The agency declared the quake had a depth of 16.1 km and that it occurred 12 km southwest of Ferndale, California.
Ferndale, a town of about 15,000 residents, is 420 km north of San Francisco and 31.54 km south of Eureka, California.
The US Tsunami Warning System said it was unlikely that a tsunami would occur after the quake.
