“Keeping your lawn healthy and lush throughout the summer is a realistic goal, and it’s best achieved through consultation with a lawn care service. Here are some of the essentials to get you started.”

1. Fertilize Warm-Season Grass

In early summer, provide a boost to your warm-season grass by fertilizing it. This type of grass, thriving at around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, benefits from timely fertilization, enhancing its thickness and overall health. Don’t over-apply, as excessive fertilization can stress the grass. Use a summer-formulated fertilizer and stick precisely to the application instructions.

“For cool-season grass, avoid summer fertilization. Those types of grass require spring and fall applications,” says Gulius.

2. Mow High

Encourage robust root growth and heat tolerance by mowing your grass at a higher height. Taller grass creates more shade, preventing weed germination and competition. Sharpen mower blades to ensure a clean cut. This also avoids tearing which can make the grass vulnerable to moisture loss. Adjust mower blade height based on grass type—2–3 inches for warm season and 3–4 inches for cool season. Grasscycling, or leaving clippings on the lawn, aids decomposition and nourishes the grass.

“Don’t worry about how it looks – that remaining grass is a big health booster for your lawn, so don’t allow it the sight of it to stress you out. It’s worth it,” says Gulius.

3. Treat For Pests

Address potential pest issues by applying a preventive grub control product if insects like Japanese beetles, June bugs, or European chafers are present. Follow product instructions carefully.

4. Control Weeds

Act swiftly against weeds with a targeted post-emergent herbicide designed for broadleaf weed elimination, sparing your grass. Exercise caution as herbicides may impact the grass; consider hand-pulling weeds if feasible.

5. Water Deeply And Infrequently

Combat moisture depletion caused by dry, hot weather by watering thoroughly once or twice a week. Ensure the water penetrates 4–6 inches deep. Water in the early morning to prevent rapid evaporation. Adjust watering based on soil resistance—more resistance requires increased watering.

“By following these guidelines, you can foster a healthy, vibrant lawn throughout the summer months,” says Gulius. “Just turn these into habits, and you’ll be able to have the lawn you’ve always wanted.”
