After being shot in a class by her student, an American teacher asks for $40 million

On Monday, according to the Associated Press, a Virginia teacher who was gravely injured in an attack by her six-year-old student submitted a $40 million lawsuit against school administrators.

Twenty-five year old first grade teacher, Abby Zwerner has spoken out about the alleged negligence of school officials on the day of a shooting that is said to have been preventable. She claims warnings were issued by several staff members informing them that one student had a gun and demonstrating dangerous behavior but these cries for help went unanswered.

On January 6, while seated at her desk in Retnik Elementary School, Zwerner sustained injuries to both the chest and hand.

The teacher has spent nearly two weeks in the hospital, and has had four surgeries since she was shot.

The school did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the lawsuit.

The Reichneck School enrolls 550 students in Kindergarten through fifth grade, according to the Virginia Department of Education website.
