It’s already established that men need sunscreen just like women do, so what you need to know now is how to get the best results from the sunscreen lotion that you are using. Contrary to what other people think, it’s not enough that you apply sunscreen just a few minutes before going out. In fact, sunscreen doesn’t even work that way. To help you protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays, here are a few tips on how to further protect your skin.

Choose a higher SPF

Dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen lotion that has at least SPF 50. The higher the SPF, the more effective it can be in protecting your skin; however, you should know that even if the SPF is 100, the effectiveness does not mean that it doubles the effects of SPF 50.

SPF is denoted by increasing numbers and these numbers are measurements on how long the sunscreen can protect your skin. Nonetheless, even if you have SPF 100, it doesn’t mean that you will be protected 100%. The chances of absorbing UV rays are just slimmer.

Apply sunscreen properly

So how do you apply skin properly? To get the best results, you should apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out or being exposed to the sun. This is because when the sun touches your skin and you have sunscreen, the heat activates the particles to deflect the sun’s rays. The 30 minutes waiting time is meant to let the ingredients set in so when the sun touches it, it becomes more effective in protecting your skin.

Part of applying sunscreen properly is by using sunscreen regularly all throughout the day. The ideal time is every hour. Yes, it sounds so excessive and unnecessary, especially for men. However, applying frequently allows replenishing the ingredients that are worn out from getting exposed to the sun.

Wear protective attire

Protective attire for men includes wearing a pair of pants, a pair of sunglasses, a cap, and a sun protection jacket. Covering yourself up helps add another layer of protection to your skin when going under the sun.

Since men sweat more than women, you can substitute long sleeves or jackets for umbrellas. In this way, at least half of your body is protected from direct sunlight.

Stay out of the sun

This tip is the simplest but hardest to do. Avoiding the sun is the most effective sunscreen tip because the less direct sun exposure, the fewer UV rays that touch your skin. Take note that the unhealthy sun exposure occurs between 8 AM to 4 PM in the afternoon. During this time, it would benefit you to stay indoors and to avoid staying long under the heat. This is the time when the sun’s UV rays are abundant and strong.

In general, men are more stubborn in protecting their skin than women. That is why they are more prone to skin diseases. Knowing that, men should put more effort now to avoid skin diseases caused by the sun. The best way to start doing that is applying sunscreen together with the other tips mentioned here.
