Gone are the days of attracting the majority of your business’ attention with flyers and pamphlets. Now, most customers rely on email to gather information about their favorite brands and decide where to spend their money. To capitalize on this, companies are investing in email marketing software to help promote their business. On our search for the best email marketing software we reviewed Campaigner, a lower price option that offers free trials and includes many of the same features that other programs offer.
- An easy and helpful interface
- Attractive templates that are mobile friendly
- 24/7 phone support
- All plans have access to all features
- Free trial requires a credit card
- Issues with Gmail imports
Campaigner is a solid email marketing tool that offers a generous trial period and many advanced features that are not limited to certain plans, but it is lacking in some variety.
Campaigner Review 2016
Campaigner is the brainchild of Protus, a prolific producer of SaaS and other software. To try Campaigner, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial that includes full access to all its features for up to 1,000 contacts. The only downside to this trial is that Campaigner still requires you to use a credit card to access it. The card won’t be charged unless you go beyond the 30-day trial, but it’s still a pet peeve to have to use it.
Like iContact, Campaigner lets you send an unlimited amount of emails a month and charges you based on how many contacts you send it to. For this reason, it can accommodate both small and large businesses. Unlike other software, Campaigner does not limit your access to features based on how many contacts you have. Either 200 or 2000, the features are all available. This is a definite plus since it does not penalize small businesses.
Some of the features that Campaigner will give you access to include:
Social sharing: you can add ‘share’ bars within your emails to clients to increase the spread of your message while taking advantage of Campaigner’s advanced reporting, which will provide insight into your campaigns.
Use of the app: Campaigner offers an app that allows you to check your email marketing account, add or delete subscribers and get reports without having to access a computer. This is only compatible with iOS though.
Workflows: Workflows allow you to create a set of rules that will cause new emails to trigger based on pre-set times or on how subscribers respond to your campaign.
API Integration: Campaigner’s API Integration allows users to share data between Campaigner and an external application. This means that you can sync data between your CRM tool and Campaigner as well as import your CRM contact list into Campaigner.
These are just a few of the main features available to Campaigner users.
Campaigner is surprisingly successful at avoiding spam filters and emails sent using the platform were often successful in reaching client inboxes or at least ‘promotion’ inboxes, such as what Gmail offers. Comparing with other software, Campaigner was the most successful in consistent delivery and some drop offs were common with all email marketing solutions tested.
Campaigner offers a variety of templates to get you started, including mobile responsive templates and templates that will prompt inactive contacts after a certain amount of time has passed. You can also store your own media files in Campaigner’s media library, including your logo and related imagery. Unfortunately, the themes available to users were limited and though Campaigner allows you to choose a date and time on which to send your email, it doesn’t allow for you to choose a time zone. This means that you would have to send multiple emails to account for clients in different time zones.
Campaigner is great for new users of email marketing software since it offers an simple to use and user friendly interface that is easy to navigate. The user manual can be accessed via a pop-up window and the dashboard has an intuitive layout with the links you’re likely to use the most. It also includes a list of your past campaigns and an overview of your subscriber activity. Some have noted that Campaigner’s list management tools are restricted, and we agree that they are a bit basic, but they are easy to use.
When creating sign-up forms, Campaigner lets you take the wheel. Sign-up forms don’t have templates on Campaigner so you will have to build on from scratch. The upside to this is that you will be able to decide exactly what information you want from your new subscribers. We would have liked to see the option of even a basic template just to make sign up quicker and easier for newbies.
The issue we continued to run into was Campaigner’s lag. The delays aren’t terribly long but they can become frustrating when you’re in a rush to send an email.
Overall, we think Campaigner is a top notch email marketing tool that sits right up there with iContact and is at a good price point. We would definitely recommend it to small businesses as their first foray into email marketing as it offers a simple and intuitive platform with no limitations on features for smaller accounts.
