While times of stress can get to all of us, it can hit some people harder than others. If you’re struggling with poor mental and emotional health right now, you’re not alone.

In a time when our mental and emotional health may not be at its best, here are five things you can do to improve it.

1. Exercise

Though you’ve probably heard it before, it’s for good reason. Getting up and exercising releases endorphins, which can improve your mood and, over time, your mental health.

Now, that’s easier said than done. Getting up is the hardest part, but once you’ve done that it’s all about the baby steps. The key is to start small and stay consistent.

Pick an exercise you enjoy doing and know you can stick with. Whether it’s walking, dancing or biking try finding something that you’ll look forward to!

2. Eat a Balanced Diet

You’d be surprised how much of your diet affects your mood. Certain foods like bananas, chocolate, and salmon can make you happier! It all comes down to the nutrients inside.

Omega-3 fatty acids, B12, and Vitamin C can all help improve your mental health and energy levels. Sticking to a balanced diet provides your body with the vitamins and nutrients it needs to survive and keep up your emotional and mental health!

3. Communicate

One of the most important things you can do for yourself when your mental and emotional needs aren’t being met is to talk to someone. This can be anyone from a family member or friend you trust, to a therapist.

There is a difference between having a bad day, having a mental disorder, and having a mental illness. Despite popular belief, the mental disorder definition and the definition of mental illness is different.

Sometimes, even just telling someone how you’re feeling can make you feel better, so don’t be afraid to reach out! Your emotional health is important,

4. Practice Mindfulness

Practicing mindfulness can be beneficial to not only your emotional health, but it can also improve your relationships. Being mindful can mean different things to different people, but the goal here is to reflect and focus on yourself and the moment you’re in.

You can be mindful of how you treat other people, how you treat yourself, or by simply focusing on the good of the moment you’re in. Being mindful of the world and people around us can oftentimes bring peace and mental clarity in times when we feel overwhelmed and insecure.

5. Focus on Positivity

The best way to improve your mental health is to focus on the positivity that surrounds you. Even when you have a bad day, positivity is focusing on that one even semi-good thing that happened and holding on to it.

Positivity is being able to see the good or staying optimistic about even things that seem bleak. You can help improve your positive thinking by practicing gratefulness or journaling about your day.
