A “mass shooting” in Baltimore, USA, leaves dead and wounded

At least two people were killed and 28 wounded in a shooting early Sunday in Baltimore, USA.

During a news conference, Deputy Police Commissioner Rich Worley announced that the police had received several reports of shootings in the Brooklyn borough of the Maryland city shortly after 12:30 a.m. Sunday (4:30 GMT).

Upon our arrival, we discovered several individuals who had sustained gunshot wounds, as stated by the speaker. At the scene, authorities confirmed the unfortunate loss of life of an 18-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man, as detailed in the police statement.

The injured are receiving treatment in the region’s hospitals, and three of them are in critical condition.

Worley mentioned that the law enforcement agencies are actively engaged in the process of identifying a suspect and determining the motive behind the shooting incident.

“It’s a huge tragedy that shouldn’t have happened,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott told the news conference.

“It highlights once again the repercussions of the excessive proliferation of illegal weapons and the need to address them,” he added.

High incidence of shooting

The United States has more guns than its population.The country has the highest rate of gunfire deaths of any developed country, with the death toll reaching 20,200 in 2022, according to the Armed Violence Archive.

This is at least the 337 shooting incidents this year, according to the organization, which defines a “mass shooting” as a shooting that results in the injury or death of four or more people.
